About event
In this reading group we want to deal with universalism and why radical humanism sees it as a necessary prerequisite for comprehensive emancipation. Even though it is now fundamentally attacked as Western and patriarchal by various postcolonial theories - and critical self-reflection is urgently needed - it is still seen as a necessary basis in positions based on Marx and critical theory if the goal of an association of free people is still being pursued. We want to deal with the reasons for this and the discussion of the criticism of universalism using various texts.
Problems of intersectional social theory, cultural relativism and difficulties with a non-materialistic anti-racism will be topics of our reading group, hopefully with interesting discussions about them.
The texts will be read at home and then discussed in the reading group. Previous theoretical knowledge is not a hindrance, but not a requirement.
The dates are:
Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Heinrich Böll Foundation's Berlin Education Center
Olivaer Platz 16, 10707 Berlin, 4. First floor
The educational center's premises are unfortunately only partially usable for wheelchair users: There is an elevator (measuring 125 cm x 70 cm). However, there is an edge of almost 5 cm to get into the rooms. There are no accessible toilets. We apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, at the moment we are not in a financial position to renovate the old building accordingly.
There will also be the option to participate online. When registering, please indicate in the "Comments" field if you would like to participate online.
The event is sponsored by the Berlin State Center for Civic Education.
