As an extension of ongoing work with various reader groups, the workshop “Reading Circles. Practices of Collective Reading” will take place at the end of this month.

👉Registration is required for the readings "Reading Otherwise" and "Tools of Resistance" (please contact Georgia Lummert at [email protected]). The texts are read together in the sessions; No preparation is necessary.
👀What is it about?
Reading groups are experiencing a renaissance. Be it in the library, the queer bookstore or in prison, be it in the online reading group or in the context of union work: communal reading produces different effects than individual reading. But what forms do they take specifically - and what spaces of experience and possibility do they contain?
Starting from the assumption that aesthetic, community-building and political dimensions of reading interpenetrate each other in a special way in practices of collective reading, the workshop is dedicated to the format of the reading group. The aim is to shed light on historical and contemporary ways of reading together in political, academic, artistic or trade union contexts.
The workshop brings academics from different disciplines into conversation with leaders such as participants in reading groups, librarians, booksellers and publishing employees, against the background of their respective To reflect on the practices and potential of collective reading using expertise, experiences and perspectives. The format of the reading group is explored on the one hand through lectures and discussion groups, and on the other hand through exploratory formats in which different reading modes are tested and discussed together on site.

This is a collaborative event of the 2020 Cluster of Excellence "Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective" with the Leibniz Center for Literature and Cultural Research (ZfL), the Literaturforum im Brechthaus within the framework of the Political Aesthetics Working Group, and diffract. Center for Theoretical Periphery.
It is organized by Moritz Gansen (CMB/diffrakt), Ivana Perica (ZfL), and Barbara Bausch, project "Reading Reading. On an Aesthetic Practice," Research Area 4: "Literary Currencies."
