The rock and pop scene of the former GDR did not only consist of Puhdys, Karat, Silly and City. There were also many other top groups in various genres. In the field of electronic music, the then Federal Republic of Germany had, among others, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk and others on offer.
The electronic band in the East, on the other hand, was called POND, was founded in 1978 by Wolfgang Paule Fuchs in Berlin - Prenzlauer Berg and celebrated its 45th stage anniversary in 2023. They were the first group in the GDR to perform electronic instrumental music live. Their LPs “Planetenwind” and “Auf der Seidenstrasse” sold hundreds of thousands of copies. POND is the most successful and popular band of this kind in East Germany and is still active today. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the great freedom also brought existential questions to the band. Wolfgang Fuchs fled forward.
His memories read like a special piece of music history that lives on even after the fall of communism.
Wolfgang Fuchs, called Paule (after his former idol Paul McCartney), is a rock musician, synthesizer artist and POND mastermind with heart and soul, and is also state-certified, as was usual and required in the GDR. In his book he reports on the life of musicians in the GDR up to the present day. It has already been published in its third edition as a hardcover in a particularly elegant edition, supplemented with further chapters and photos up to the present.
