About event

We cordially invite you to a lecture by Professor Horáček from the Institute of Global Change Research of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic on the topic Forests in time of change: A biomonitor to understand the response of forests.
The lecture will take place on December 9, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. in the Brno Observatory and Planetarium, Kraví hora 522/22, Brno.
Entrance is free.

The lecture will focus on the effects of climate change on forest ecosystems in Europe and the Czech Republic, with special emphasis on modern forestry practices. We will present the DendroNetwork, a key tool that enables a better understanding and response to the challenges of contemporary forestry.
We will discuss the choice of tree species according to their sensitivity to environmental changes, especially drought. Different tree species, such as spruce, pine, beech and oak, have different levels of drought tolerance, which is important for maintaining forest health. The growth response of woody plants serves as a direct indicator of stress factors such as habitat degradation or climate change. This biomonitoring enables real-time analysis of forest conditions and plays a key role in understanding forest responses to climate change. This helps us design effective adaptation strategies to preserve the ecosystem functions of forests.
With increasing average temperatures and changes in the distribution and timing of precipitation, there is significant stress on forest trees, especially due to drought. This stress weakens the resistance of trees to pests and diseases, leading to increased tree mortality and reduced forest productivity. Rising temperatures also affect the range and distribution of tree species depending on their resistance to heat and drought. There are significant changes in the species composition of forests, which affects the overall functioning of forest ecosystems.
The combination of drought and high temperatures leads to increased mortality of woody plants, as forests are heavily dependent on the availability of water. Forest ecosystems are very sensitive to changes in the water balance. Water plays a central role in the physiological processes of plants, and its availability influences structural and functional changes from individual cells to entire trees. Knowledge of these processes is key to effective forest management.
This lecture will offer a holistic view of current issues related to climate change and forest ecosystems and provide scientific knowledge for effective adaptation to these changes.
