It would be difficult to find a more mismatched couple than the two of them. He - a seasoned boatman who has already experienced all kinds of things on his ship "African Queen" and the only thing he wants is to enjoy a peaceful life in seclusion. That's how she lived her whole life so far. A well-bred bourgeois daughter from a respectable parson's family desires nothing more than adventure and daring deeds.
These two coincidentally find themselves on the same ship together, literally, surrounded by the enemy.
It is an unenviable situation. They get in each other's way, get on each other's nerves, have completely different opinions on drinking alcohol, singing religious songs, what is and what is not a patriotic duty. Despite this, in the end they are able to swim together through dangerous rapids, survive enemy fire, treacherous shallows, shipwrecks, and even mosquito attacks. The original mutual enmity turns into great love.
