About event

J. G. Tajovského Theater - N. Machiavelli: MANDRAGORA

A new look at the renowned Renaissance comedy about a deceived cuckold
The well-known Renaissance comedy Mandragora has a firm place in European culture. Nicollo Machiavelli inserted into the humorous story about the deceived cuckold not only risqué situations, but also philosophical reflections and criticism of pretense.

The plot of the play is situated in Florence, the cradle of Renaissance art and the author's birthplace. At the time when the carnival frenzy is at its peak in the city, human passions and character weaknesses multiply, mask is put on mask. The well-traveled Callimaco longs for the charms of the beautiful Lucrezia, the wife of the uncouth doctor Nicia. When looking for ways to get close to her, together with his cunning companion Liguria, they follow the motto "the end justifies the means". They skillfully involve Friar Timoteo in their masquerade, who is no stranger to money. The laconic servant Siro can unexpectedly contribute good advice.

Director Peter Palik supported the play's dynamism and exaggeration by having the actors perform in it as members of the versatile street band Mandragora. Palik is also the author of the play and scene adaptation. The distinctive costumes of the actors were designed by Eva Farkašová. The dramaturgy was covered by Uršuľa Turčanová, and the live songs based on Machiavelli's enchanted verses were set to music by Martin Geišberg and Daniel Špiner. The production features Juraj Smutný, Ondřej Daniš, Daniel Výrostek, Lucia Letková, Richard Sanitra and Tomáš Ivanka as a guest.
