🎥 Summer School, 2001 (2025) - What does it mean to have two homes? And what if they are thousands of kilometers apart?

The first Czech-Slovak Viet film Summer School, 2001 tells with ease and humor about the vicissitudes of the Vietnamese community living and working in the Czech Republic. The market in Cheb is full of Adidas sweatpants with four stripes and children guarding the stalls, while their fathers gamble and their mothers try to find their way in the Czech administration.

👦 So is the family of 17-year-old Kien with a bright red hairstyle. After ten years in Vietnam, where he took care of his grandmother, he returns to his family in the Czech Republic. Instead of a warm welcome, however, he has to iron Pokemon on T-shirts and master Czech grammar by the new school year. However, Kien gets closer to his teacher at summer school and during flirting by the lake, a secret surfaces that will turn the life of the market upside down...

💬 In a discussion moderated by Kristína Milová from the Participation Institute - an organization that strengthens the dialogue between citizens and self-government in Trenčín - visual artist and author of the book Everything that unites us: The story of a Slovak Vietnamese woman Kvet Nguyen and sociologist Elena Gallo Kriglerová, who is dedicated to the integration of minorities and people with a migrant background, will talk about the importance of creating communities, cultural identity and finding a home in new places.

🎞️ About the film:

Vietnamese director Dužan Duong, working in the Czech Republic, brings an authentic view of the Vietnamese community, which is an organic part of modern Czech history. In an unusual formal way, the film deals with a generation lost between two worlds, the clash of the new and the old, as well as the search for one's place in the world.
