🎥 Can you hear me? (2025) – A sensitive Spanish film that opens the world of the deaf to the audience
A Spanish film appreciated by audiences and film critics Do you hear me? about the preparation for motherhood of a deaf woman already on July 24th at the Summer Cinema on Hviezdoslavová!
🤍 During pregnancy, deaf Ángela struggles with fears about whether she can establish a bond with her daughter and cope with her upbringing in a world created by hearing people and for hearing people. An exceptional and sensitive film, which opens the world of the deaf to the audience, won the Audience Award at the Berlinale.
💬 Film Poujes ma? explores the complexities of deaf-hearing relationships. What are the contradictions, connections, but also love between these two worlds? Why do people with healthy hearing not understand a different experience of everyday reality? How can we give the deaf more space to express themselves?
🎙️ These and other topics will be heard in the discussion before the film. Her guests will be Michal Hefty, director of the civic association I think, which is dedicated to making cultural events accessible for the deaf, and Michaela Kolláriková, a cultural worker dealing with social inclusion, accessibility and community care. The discussion will be moderated by cultural manager and co-founder of Kino Úsmev in Košice, Barbora Andor Tóthová.
🎞️ About the film
🎬 Director Eva Libertad decided to film a story about her sister Miriam Garlo, who is a deaf actress. The impetus for the film was sparked by their confidential conversation full of fears and expectations. Miriam was thinking about becoming a mother - but in a world created by hearing people and for hearing people.
👂 In order to gain a deeper understanding of motherhood in the deaf community, she spoke with deaf women who shared with the director their experiences with pregnancy, childbirth and the subsequent upbringing of children.
💛 This film is not a treatise on deafness. The main character of the film, Ángela, is not supposed to be a representative of the deaf community, but rather a woman who is finding her way through motherhood and trying to deal with the problems that appear in her relationship. Ángela also has a complicated relationship with her parents and above all she wants her daughter to know and like her.
✨ Do you hear me? it is above all a story about a woman ready for the world. However, the world is not ready for her.
