🎞️ The Ladies of Rochefort (1966) – First time in Slovakia!
✨ The opening night of the Summer Cinema will bring the iconic French musical The Ladies of Rochefort by director Jacques Demy. The film will be shown for the first time ever in Slovakia in a digitally restored version with Slovak subtitles, with English subtitles, as well as with descriptive subtitles in the Slovak language for the deaf.
🎤 Before the screening, there will be a discussion with the writer and member of the editorial staff of the Kapitál monthly Soňa Uriková and with the debuting screenwriter and director Teodor Vladár. In the discussion moderated by playwright and film curator Ema Nemčovičová, they will talk about watching movies as an escape from reality, why inclusion in visual art is important, but also how culture is created in different social contexts.
🎥 About the film
💕 Twins Delphine and Solange live in the pastel town of Rochefort. Every day they dream of meeting the love of their life. However, whenever this is about to happen, soul mates narrowly miss out. When a fair comes to town, the fates of the residents of dreamy Rochefort become even more intertwined. However, chance has bad timing.
🌟 Starring the legendary Catherine Deneuve, Françoise Dorléac and Gene Kelly accompanied by timeless music by Michel Legrand, multiple Oscar and Grammy Award winner.
🎬 French director Jacques Demy is one of the most important figures in world cinema. He started creating in the sixties - a period of economic prosperity, revolutions, political softening, but mainly creative freedom and experiments. Demy turns the world and its realities into fairytale backdrops where the characters sing and dance despite the fact that their lives may not be rosy. Demy thereby suggests that dancing and singing can be as natural as walking through the city.
🎭 The film pays tribute to the American tradition of musicals, but its Europeanness lies in the melancholic undertones of the story. By building an ideal world, Jacques Demy brings lightness into our reality, but at the same time awakens in us the awareness that such happiness exists - perhaps around the corner, but we will probably never reach it.
💛 The Misses from Rochefort is an ode to happiness, which is overshadowed by the constant fear that life may slip through our fingers. Whoever sees this film for the first time today is entering the golden age of cinema. The Misses of Rochefort is not a superficial escapism, but a vivid, electrifying feeling that awakens a desire for joy in us.
🏘️ The facades in the real town of Rochefort in France were completely painted white in 1965 for filming. At the request of its residents, the city still looks the way Jacques Demy and the entire film crew transformed it.
