Although they are convinced that they will not see each other again, since each lives in a different part of the USA, they exchange phone numbers. Shortly thereafter, however, Gabriella's mother is transferred to Albuquerque, New Mexico by the management of her company, and Gabriela coincidentally starts attending the same high school as Troy. Of course they meet, but their meeting becomes the beginning of a series of unexpected complications, especially when they rather timidly participate in an audition for roles in the upcoming school musical. Eventually - to the chagrin of Sharpay Evans and her brother Ryan - they manage to land the lead roles. The siblings decide to do whatever it takes to reverse Professor Darbus's decision and get the roles for themselves. Also playing into their hands are Troy's best friend and teammate Chad's concerns that his singing will stop him from practicing for the upcoming championships, and high school decathlon captain Taylor McKessie's efforts to recruit the smart Gabriella to her team. Both are willing to do anything, even teaming up with the Evanses and coming up with a plan to turn Troy and Gabriella against each other. In addition, the Evanses manage to convince Professor Darbus to postpone the second round of the competition to the same time as the championship match and the decathlon final. In such a situation, is it possible for Troy and Gabrielle to reconcile, get roles in a musical, and help their friends win the basketball game and the high school decathlon?
