About event
Russia resists Western economic sanctions thanks to the cooperation of Central Asian countries such as Kyrgyzstan. Due to Kyrgyzstan's strategic location, all goods from China bound for Central Asia and Russia must pass through its borders, and it also serves as a transshipment point for goods from countries that Putin is not officially allowed to trade with. Investigative journalist Ali Toktakunov, who worked for many years in the Kyrgyz section of Radio Free Europe, helped uncover the deeper connections of these deals.
This was one of a number of cases that made Toktakunov an inconvenient person in the eyes of the corrupt ruling nomenclature. He refused a million dollars for his silence. His wife, Samara Sagynbaeva, who is also the film's director, also found herself in danger. Because of threats, they flee their native country and live under protection in the Czech Republic. The documentary, shot by a daily newspaper, presents a portrait of a courageous journalist as well as a warning message about the fragility of democracy and the justice system in a country where freedom of speech is definitely not a matter of course.
