About event
The last evening of the Summer Cinema under the Stars series 2026 will take place on náměstí Míru!
The last summer film evening of Prague 2 will be dedicated to the popular film The Public School by director Jan Svěrák.
The Public School (1991)
Director: Jan Svěrák
It is shortly after the war and a ten-year-old boy is attending a boys' class in one of the schools on the outskirts of Prague. Eda Souček with his friend Tonda. Like the other classmates, Ed and Tonda also completely ignore the resigned teacher Max's attempts to teach, and are more interested in the color of her panties than in the subject matter. It is not surprising that one day the teacher goes crazy and a new teacher takes her place. His name is Igor Hnízdo and he is different from all the teachers the boys have met up to that time. He wears a military uniform, has a real pistol on his belt, and immediately establishes a strict regime in the classroom, which also includes a very nimble cane and engaging narratives about war experiences, through which the teacher intersperses the taught material. Although his methods are unexpectedly effective, very soon clouds begin to gather over the teacher. Not only do some not quite believe his heroic stories, but his weakness for the fairer sex begins to show. The disgraced tram driver's wife, whom Hnízdo leaves for the sake of coquettish students, the Fabián twins, writes a report and the teacher is threatened with punishment for a moral offence. Although Eda, like the others, stands up for his favorite teacher, he begins to realize that the real hero for him is not actually the flamboyantly heroic teacher, but his meticulous father, Fanouš Souček, with his unobtrusive, everyday, yet real heroism.
