LIKE A STONE AGAINST THE SKY
Ljuba Šlechtová & František Štípek
opening 13/05/2026 at 18 h
duration of the exhibition: 14/05 - 21/06/2026
The unruly body turns into a working machine and starts working like a clock, as it appears in the thoughts of Thomas Hobbes, when he writes in Leviathan "The heart is after all only a spur, the nerves only wires, and the joints only cogs, which move the whole body as the creator intended." The organization of work, productivity and everyday life was structured according to the logic of efficiency, discipline and measurement. We are crossing the boundaries of nature and extending the working day beyond the limits set by the sunlight, the seasons and the human body.
Today, the line between work and rest is not blurring because of factory shifts, but because of the notification that comes at three in the morning. Digital work has no natural end, no machine to stop, no factory gate to close. The precarity of the modern labor market ensures that availability becomes a given and constant alertness the norm. The Hobbes machine didn't disappear, it just changed form. Can we imagine such a life at all, or has the discipline of work penetrated us so much that we automatically transform free time into productivity?
The exhibition cycle titled SYSTEM TEST for 2026 in the Prostoru Olga gallery continues the themes of previous years (2025- DR. UMÚMNÍ, 2024 – COLLECTIVE HERITAGE: ADAPTATION AND TRANSFORMATION, 2023 – RODIČOVSKÁ, 2022 – DAUGHTERS, SONS, MOTHERS, FATHERS) by thematizing the transformative potential of art in a broader social concept. City of Prague and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. It is open every Wednesday and Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. and on event days.
