Images of the city in the poetry of surrealists
📖 📖 📖
In the thirties of the 20th century, surrealism arrived in Bratislava under the name of surrealism. Since space (and especially urban space) is one of the key categories of surrealist poetics, it naturally crystallized in the Slovak context as well, a unique, surrealistic image of the big city - interwar Bratislava. In the surrealistic image of the city, not only inspirations from surrealism were reflected, but also his own initiation experience and fascination with the big city, social feelings and later also the harbinger of war and apocalyptic visions of the world. However, we will also touch upon the seemingly anachronistic returns of surrealism to Bratislava in the sixties and nineties.
The excursion will begin on Šafárik Square in front of the Faculty of Law building. We will walk past the Old Bridge along the embankment to the SNP Bridge, from there past the former Jewish quarter to Rybné námestie with a view of the castle hill. The aim of the excursion is to use the example of the city space, in which practically all poets of surrealism worked at one time, what avant-garde inspirations from European capitals they used and how they combined them with more traditional poetic approaches. Last but not least, it will be about how the surrealists perceived the space of a large Slovak city and what visions they evoked in them during that period.
