About event
In Lonely Angel you will experience an intriguing mix of baroque and modern music around the themes of struggle, redemption and comfort. Rick Stotijn brings out the dark voice of his double bass in Mazzoli's Dark With Excessive Bright. In Vask's Lonely Angel, an angel floats above the world who sadly views the state of the devastated earth. An almost imperceptible, loving touch of his wings brings comfort and healing. The solo violin functions as the superhuman voice of the angel who tirelessly watches over the world. Mazzoli utilizes the dark and moving sound of the double bass in Dark with Excessive Bright, a phrase from Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost, which explores themes such as good and evil, forgiveness and redemption. Honegger's Second Symphony runs through the program like an impending rescue. Written during the Second World War and despite the dark nature of the work, the symphony ends optimistically and jubilantly in a moving climax, symbolizing hope and liberation.
