In a city that is influenced by its rich history and the ongoing is characterized by housing problems, filmmaker Rory Ryder embarks on a journey that takes an unexpected turn. While investigating Berlin's growing housing crisis and the government's inadequate response, Rory stumbles upon a mysterious, forgotten building from the past: the Silverfish. Once an important part of post-war architecture, the Silverfish had been forgotten until now. The deeper Rory delves into its story, the more he realizes that this structure is not just a relic of the past, but a potentially revolutionary approach to solving many of today's global problems.
Lost Silverfish of Berlin is the first film to shed light on the untold story of these once significant structures, which were built in the GDR after World War II to meet the urgent need for emergency shelters and other buildings. The film shows their historical significance and at the same time creates a vision of how they could solve current housing problems. In addition to conversations with urban planners, architects and historians, Rory also meets people who still remember the Silverfish buildings or still feel a strong connection to them today. Featuring exclusive footage and a rare interview with the inventor of the Silverfish, whom Rory tracked down shortly before his death, the film takes viewers on an extraordinary journey that reimagines this forgotten building as a sustainable, dignified solution that can also strengthen communities.
From tiny houses and mobile living to emergency shelters in disaster zones, the Silverfish concept bridges the needs of our time. In the film, Rory creates a bold new vision that could provide shelter, community and hope for hundreds of millions of people worldwide. The film not only shines a spotlight on Berlin's housing problems, but also offers a global perspective on how this forgotten structure - lost in history - could hold a key to solving some of today's most pressing challenges.
