About event
MOST INFLUENTIAL DUTCH COMPOSER OF THE 20TH CENTURY
De Staat (1976) is the most famous work by Louis Andriessen, the most influential Dutch composer of the 20th century. This highly personal mix of minimal music, avant-garde, jazz and a strong dash of Stravinsky caused a shock wave in the international music world. Asko|Schönberg links the politically charged work to a brand new piece by Oscar Bettison, once a student of Andriessen and this season composer in residence at Asko|Schönberg.
Bettison writes his piece for the same line-up as De Staat , but with a completely different atmosphere. Just as Andriessen would have wanted it. “See it as your job to make something new sound” was the assignment Bettison once received from his teacher. With that advice in mind, he made On the slow weather of dreams. The voices are the focus, but the harps, guitars and pianos also play a prominent role.
