About event

At the December LQ - Literary Quotient we will discuss two debuts: Enfant terrible buys a one-way ticket from Kristián Lazarčík and Bernardín and Other Women from Jana Ciganíková.

The LQ - Literary Quotient discussion format has been trying since 2016 to fulfill a long-term call for critical reflection on contemporary literary creation in Slovakia. At the center of each edition of the program are always two distinctive original literary works. The selection criterion is the relevance of the title or the degree of its resonance in the domestic cultural environment.

ENFANT TERRIBLE BUYS A ONE-WAY TICKET

A collection of eight short stories by the novelist and screenwriter Kristián Lazarčík (1999) thematizes questions of sexual or gender identity and approximates the complexity of the situation in which a person finds himself unable to escape from a violent partnership or family relationship. The characters in the prose are defined against destructive behavior by a cynical mask, which is supposed to cover the inner fragility of the protagonists. The contradiction between the external coarseness and increased sensitivity of the characters often leads to a tragicomic modality, as the characters often have no choice but to survive with laughter in a world that is not bearable in this form. Lazarčík's screenwriting education is reflected in the communicativeness and freshness of the debut, which can be seen as a semantically weighty statement about the generation of today's twenty-somethings and, more broadly, also about society, which accepts any difference with difficulty and with distaste. which mercilessly and yet magically draws to the bottom of seemingly mundane stories about women, about different forms of motherhood, about families, youth and old age, or about intergenerational relationships.

"The rawness of the depiction here is combined with imagination, realism with the unreal. not to openly express what one thinks about in secret, but is often ashamed to admit it to oneself. The author's writing is liberated in this, but her characters are not, because their feelings and thoughts remain hidden from others..." Lenka Šafranová, literary critic

"Through the characters' experiences, which are so personal that we feel as if we should look away, the author touches on a common of the female experience. Her metaphor cuts to the living and shines under the skin." Nicol Hochholczerová, writer

Nina Podmanická, Martin Makara and Viliam Nádaskay will discuss books, their similarities and differences with the moderator Peter Darovec.

The creation of the event was supported by public funds from the Art Support Fund. The partners of the event are the Bratislava City Foundation, Bratislava Self-Governing Region, LITA - author's company and Rómerov dom.
