"Lucila": A tribute to Gabriela Mistral
80 years after the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Gabriela Mistral in 1945, Patricia Cerda, renowned writer Chilean resident in Berlin, and Susanne Klengel (Freie Universität Berlin) dedicate themselves in a conversation to the life and work of the Chilean poet and diplomat with a special focus on the novel "Lucila" by Patricia Cerda (Ediciones B, 2024).
In the novel "Lucila" we immerse ourselves in the last trip of Gabriela Mistral (1889–1957) to her beloved Elqui Valley. A pilgrimage not only on land, but also sentimental, in which she reviews her life from the perspective of a tireless defender of women's rights and the most important Chilean intellectual of the 20th century. From the first glimpses of her existence as Lucila Godoy to her transformation into the famous Gabriela Mistral, Patricia Cerda unravels the complexity, rebellion and cunning of a woman who imposed herself on her context to transcend and leave an indelible mark on the history of both her country and an entire continent.
