About event

“Bocarra” – a Portuguese expression for “big, open mouth, maw” – is the title of the new performance by choreographer and dancer Luísa Saraiva, which will be presented for the first time in Berlin in December. Along songs of violence, bitterness and strangeness, “Bocarra” is a choreographic exploration of sound and voice.

Based on the female singing traditions of northern Portugal and Galicia, Saraiva understands singing as an expression of non-conformity and resistance to heteronormative role models. Together with the performers Luisa Alfonso and Alexandre Achour, she develops an impressive choreography that explores closeness in the tension between care and violence using self-defense practices. This creates an interplay: the body finds its expression in the voice, which in turn shapes and changes the body.

Musical instruments specially developed for “Bocarra” appear like independent beings alongside the three performers. Activated through movements and gestures, they become extensions of the breath, the organs and the entire body. Saraiva's performance explores ways to make sound and voice audible and visible in space with and through one's own body.
