About event

Free introduction - accessible to everyone: Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba by Dylan Valley and Grant Jurius. They take you into the context and legacy of Nina Simone, her music and her message.

"My skin is black. (...) My hair is woolly. My back is strong. Strong enough to tolerate the pain. Time and again. "

Nina Simone. Ambitious. Pronounced. Bipolar. She wrote "Feelin" Good "but had no easy life. An unparalleled singer and brilliant pianist.

Singer Songwriter Mame Joses brings an evening with Nina Simone. She has been sings a big fan of Nina for more than 22 years at home and abroad. In 2010 she became semi -finalist of the Grand Prix of the Netherlands and in 2012 from The Voice of Holland. Nina and Mame both started with gospel music in the church. Ninas's debut album was Little Girl Blue. That of Mame was Grown Man Cry.

Both of them lived in Nijmegen. Just like Nina and her daughter Lisa, Mame and her daughter Yael share a musical talent. But they live in completely different times. Still?

In 2023 she would have turned 90. A great moment to look back together on who she was, what her drove and her many challenges. Her life was at least as intriguing as her versatile music. She hated the term jazz musician. Rather found herself a folk singer and described her style as black classical music. She fought against racism and for civil rights.

Mame shares stories from the life of Nina Simone and her own experiences as a black singer. Accompanied by master Pianist Bouwe Bruins, she sings the well -known and less well -known songs from her extensive oeuvre.
