Scotland, long ago . It's after the war. Macbeth and his friend Banquo return from the battlefield. They have won, they are flooded with adrenaline, their swords are still wet with blood. The name Macbeth is heard everywhere, the air hums with stories of how easily he could kill. The hero Macbeth, a murderer in the service of king and country, has a great future ahead of him. Strange beings predict that he will be king. This will require actions that will spill a lot of blood. It is said that Macbeth just listens to his bloodlust. Encouraged by his wife, he murders his way to absolute power: first he murders the king, then his best friends, then their families, including their children. It seems that the witches' prediction has at least partially come true. However, the joy of absolute power does not come. Macbeth and his Lady are consumed by remorse. The second part of the prediction will inevitably come true, however improbable its assumptions. Abandoned by friends and enemies alike, Macbeth has only one escape left - from himself.

Macbeth is Shakespeare's shortest and bloodiest tragedy. It was written between 1603-1607 and is partially based on the true story of King Macbeth (1005-1057) of Scotland, who rose to the throne in 1040 by killing King Duncan I. Although his actions seem unimaginable and inhuman, we have an uneasy feeling , that Macbeth is not just a monster. Even as Macbeth bathes in blood, he thinks about his humanity, he sees his actions as the expression of some higher thought: a black thought, but a thought. It reminds us that man is a self-reflective animal. Macbeth is the kind of person we might become if someone pushed the wrong buttons on us. If we are horrified by Macbeth's crimes, we are horrified by ourselves.

Jens Harzer and Johan Simons have been fruitful artistic collaborations for many years, as evidenced by such productions as Theodore Storm's Rider on the White Horse, Siegfried Lenz's German Lesson or Dostoyevsky's Idiot. After Heinrich von Kleist's Penthesile (presented in Prague at our festival in 2019) and Anton Chekhov's Ivanov, Macbeth is now their third joint production at the Schauspielhaus Bochum.

Invited to Berliner Theatertreffen 2024!
