Maemo is the music project of the Swiss-Moroccan singer Malika Alaoui, who now lives in Berlin. Malika toured the world for four years as the lead singer of Cirque du Soleil's show Alegría before founding Maemo - a project that symbolizes her unwavering desire for creative expression and artistic freedom.
Described as "Afropean nomadic chanson", Maemo is a four-piece band in which Malika is the main composer and lyricist. The band members are:
– Malika Alaoui (CH/MA): vocals and percussion (bendir, glockenspiel, guiro, shaker)
– Valentina Bellanova (IT): flutes (Nay, Kaval)
– Gábor Hartyáni (HU): cello, back vocals
– George Birkett (GB): guitar, back vocals
– Matteo Bowinkelmann (DE): Percussion (surdo, congas, bendir, karkabas, calebasse…)
Maemo's songs are written in French, Creole, Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and in invented languages. The music is deeply rooted in the sounds of North and West Africa, Caribbean rhythms, blues and jazz. European influences such as accordion, music from the Alps, poetic circus, French chanson and Eastern European “Gypsy” sounds also flow in.
The music is inspired by the beauty of the mountains, the abundance of the plains, the warmth of city life. She speaks of people, of lack, of abandonment, of love, of the longing for freedom, of joy in life, of death, of the feeling of being alive. The music is spontaneous and authentic, combining extreme joy and deep melancholy, like a cry from the heart. Maemo is ultimately an ode to life and the here and now.

Spontanée and authentic, the music of Maemo mélange joie intense et profonde melancolie – like a cri du cœur Maemo is a ode à la vie et à l’instant présent.
