About event
An intimate dialogue between mother and daughter, recorded in film and translated into dance
How many of our mothers do we carry with us without knowing it? Mama’ku is an intimate and layered film and show about the invisible lines between mother and daughter, about some generations in silence. A journey past memories, movements and stories that live on in our body.
The evening opens with a documentary by Sven Peetoom, who followed choreographer Cheroney Pelupessy and her mother on their journey to Indonesia and the Moluccas, where Cheroney tries to discover her mother's past and the traces she has left. Memories that were hidden for generations are starting. In old habits and deep -rooted stories, Cheroney not only discovers history, but also himself. This is followed by a physical duet between Cheroney and the renowned Javanese dancer Elly Lutan (73) from Jakarta, in which contemporary dance and traditional movement language merge.
Cheroney Pelupessy is een choreograaf, danseres en maker With roots in the Indonesian and Moluccan heritage. In her work she investigates how history, identity and cultural legacy live on in the body and movement. She combines contemporary dance with traditional Indonesian and Moluccan influences, with which she develops a unique motion signature that is rooted in her origins and at the same time innovative.
her first major performance, Keturunan (2022), meant the beginning of an indone and the shared inheritance. This narrative is the common thread in her work, in which she tells stories that have remained underexposed for a long time. Her choreographies are more than dance; ze zijn fysieke archieven van herinnering, verbondenheid en transformatie.
