When Man Man released his last album, “Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In Between,” frontman Honus Honus (born Ryan Kattner) was in a state of turmoil, oscillating between hope and cynicism. The album ended up being released during the pandemic, which is not unrelated to the situation. (But like this strange turn of world events, boredom today seems far away for the creative force of Man Man, whose renewed sense of purpose shines through in Carrot on Strings (out June 7, Sub Pop), his latest album, which radiates a mix of calm and confidence.
Kattner has always embodied a wild Pied Piper spirit: his melodic art-rock production was just enough disordered to be both intriguing and distressing, its creativity was so seductive that we were drawn into it, even if we were never sure where Man Man would take us. less inventive, but its ethics are radical in the context of the group's two decades of idiosyncratic career.
