The Letter Writing Marathon is an international Amnesty International event where people around the world write letters to help specific people. Every year, the campaign peaks around December 10, i.e. Human Rights Day. Last year, 568 letter-writing events took place in the Czech Republic, at which 19,913 letters were written against injustice. This year, KJŠ is joining the marathon venues.
"Gilbert Noam, a trans man from the Czech Republic, wanted to change his official gender. But the laws required him to undergo castration for this bureaucratic act – an invasive procedure that permanently disables reproductive function. The condition of castration represents a violation of the right to recognition of gender identity, the right to bodily integrity and personal autonomy. In addition, it carries significant health risks and represents an unnecessary intervention in the body of trans* people. Gilbert therefore refused to undergo castration and decided to advocate for a legislative change."
Thanks to Gilbert's determination, the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic already this year ordered the government to abolish the condition of castration and to create a new legal regulation of official change by June 2025 gender, however, is still not won. Trans* people still face an unnecessarily complicated, demanding and invasive process in our country. This would be solved precisely by an official sex change based on self-determination, as is already the case in many countries of the world.

From December 4 to 11, 2024, you can come and write a letter to the Czech legislature at any time during library opening hours and express your support for trans* people in the Czech Republic. We will start the marathon with a screening of a documentary film about a trans* footballer from Cambodia, SK Lotus. Join us for this year's Letter Writing Marathon!
