Women in search of a “room of their own”. From history to fiction

Two novels by the Argentine poet, narrator and researcher María Rosa Lojo (Buenos Aires, 1954) are dedicated to women writers: A woman at the end of the century, about the pioneer Eduarda Mansilla de García (1834-1892), early translated into German, and Las libre del Sur, about the essayist, editor, translator and patron Victoria Ocampo (1890-1979), founder and director of the famous magazine “Sur”.

Many questions arise from their lives. Can a woman really become an “author”? What cost is paid for this, both in the 19th and 20th centuries? How do you get out of the “dolls house” and get the “own room” that Virginia Woolf dreamed of? From historical fiction, based on rigorous research, Lojo recreates her battles, hesitations, achievements and resignations and her contribution to the creation of an innovative and disruptive female literary tradition. Based on these novels, in dialogue with Claudia Hammerschmidt (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena), a tour of the author's extensive work will be proposed, where women are revealed as agents of history, culture and political transformation.
