The Refusal to Cut
"One Day in Berlin" takes its conceptual scaffolding from Sebastian Schipper’s 2015 film "Victoria" (Norwegian title: "En natt i Berlin"), shot in a single unbroken take across one night in Kreuzberg and Mitte. Not as imitation but as structure, seeing duration as event and consequence as form.
Martin Mentzoni’s paintings and drawings move within that same logic of sequence and inevitability. Each work marks the next decision. Mentzoni engages with paint and line in a way that is equally impulsive and unrecoverable. Mark replaces dialogue and gesture becomes script. As time passes, decisions accumulate before concluding in work.
With this exhibition in the city of Berlin, where I once lived, and always long, the city functions as residue rather than setting. What remains once the momentum fades. Where are we now, watching the sun rise in a city that no longer has room for SchwuZ, where techbros feast on the carcass of rebellion.
Where "Victoria" dissolves the border between cinema and experience, "One Day in Berlin" traces that same erosion in paint, graphite and presence. No reset, only continuous action till all is won or lost.
