About event
We invite you to the discussion and presentation of Martin Palúch's Slovak cut film on Monday, June 22. from 18:00 to Košice Artfor on Hlavná ul. 87
The debate is moderated by Martin Kaňuch, editor-in-chief of Kino Ikon magazine.
How does new film meaning emerge from already existing archive footage?
Film scientist and historian Martin Palúch, together with Martin Kaňuch – editor-in-chief of Kino Ikon magazine, will present a specific genre of editing documentary, which is represented in Slovakia by names such as Paľo Bielik, Ján Kadár, Ctibor Kováč, and Rudolf Urg.
They will explain how the approach to the film archive has changed over the decades - from propagandistic use to the author's reflection on history. Together they will discuss what role the editor and director play in the reconstruction of historical memory and why edited film is a key tool for understanding Slovak national identity.
Participants will learn about the aesthetic laws of editing, working with found material (found footage) and how a new film is made up of historical pieces of film.
The author of the publication, Martin Palúch, brings an alternative view of history. of Slovak film from the perspective of the development of the editing form of the documentary genre from the period 1938 – 2025. In addition to the historical line, he also follows the theoretical reflection of the compilation film (j. Leyda), but only in the context of examples from Slovak cinematography.
He notes the propaganda potential of the works. It sheds light on the political intentions for which they were created, describes the goals they were supposed to fulfill, so that the recycled contexts would have a meaningful impact on contemporary recipients. A special chapter is devoted to examples of artistic experimentation with editing, which enriched the creative potential of Slovak cinematography in an original way.
The event is organized by: International film festival Art Film Košice, Slovak Film Institute and Košice Artforum
Entrance to the event is free
We look forward to seeing you in the bookstore📚
