About event
Tram monument / last bell
Tyršovo nábrežie lost one of the spaces of alternative culture this year. Although the tram did not go to eternity, only to its imaginary "second life after the life of a cultural center" in the form of a museum exhibit, its activity-filled essence could no longer accompany it on this journey. The place after its action is still charged with energy, which we wish to symbolically re-materialize on the date of the commemoration of the deceased.
The intermedia artist Martin Toldy considered a form of tribute as well as a temporal monument to the action of T3 – a cultural resource, for which he was looking for a form other than a physical resemblance. The mechanism of the tram bell is ready-made, an excerpt from a number of technical controls of the carriage, which has been standing here since 2021 (by the way, the bell was functional during the entire operation of the cultural center in it, and during the installation of exhibitions it often happened that especially children wanted to sit in the driver's cabin and ring the bell on the entire embankment). At the same time, it is a generator of a specific sound, during which a person immediately remembers a characteristic image, not unlike invoking a memory, just as certain words, smells of a situation evoke memories of those who are not here. However, ringing the bell on a symbolic level is also an imaginary act of ending, closing the story, or, on the contrary, a call for help or reinforcements. The bell warns of danger but also gives the feeling of the last point. Cink cink!
Jana Babušiaková, curator of exhibitions T3 - cultural resource
Martin Toldy is an artist, performer, researcher and organizer who has been active in the context of Slovak art since 2013. By combining intermedial projects or installations with live performances, he focuses on how we confront each other through play, chance, experimentation and collaboration. In this way, it examines contemporary cultures of care, the economy of intimacy, the politics of sharing; in other
words, our ability to be and feel together. He usually incorporates elements of humor, simplicity and absurdity into his work, as well as conceptual and research approaches. Martin Toldy graduated from the
Academy of Fine Arts in the field of Intermedia Art in 2019 with a diploma thesis on the topic "Fields and roles on our scene".
He is the founder and active member of the performance group Marína Abramovič Po Sebe Neupratuje.
He was supported by the Art Support Fund from public sources.
