Mary Ocher is part of a generation - born in the first half of 1980s - for whom, without the warm back of the privilege, it is very difficult to break the underground waves. With a lot of planning and sacrifice, it was able to make your life depend only on music and your art. This seems like Mass discourse, but today, more than in any decade of the recent past, these asymmetries are palpable and it is increasingly difficult to burn artist's life without hot back. Ocher he knew different realities throughout his child's life (born in Russia, then moved to Turkey, today lives in Berlin) and was educated with a mindset that is not virtuously anti-capitalist, but optimistic about the meeting of alternatives. Deep down, so that we look aside, that we are not just accepting the lifestyle that try to foist us.
This matters because Mary Ocher's albums are always accompanied by a manifest/daily about what we should really think about: living, living decently. That is, there is no artist jargon, but intelligent manifestos of reality. Read, for example, the latter (is on her site) around “Your Guide to Revolution”, 2024 album, where it confronts, without moralism, your life choices as opposed to the people around you. It begins by saying that it is the only underground artist she knows was not born of the privilege. It's not hard to believe. Just look around us in Portugal. This matters again because your music is made of a thriving economy, where the means always subsidize the ends, without fat. Songs forward, with a powerful engine, where art overlaps with music and involves without ornaments. The layers that the time puts it all are honest, not made to hide something, but to reveal something. It lacks some attention, because it wants to be heard, whether it lies it as an artist in full functions of deconstruction of this reality promoted by fictitious desires. The guide to the revolution is not from now, it is a whole discography.
~ Manila
inspired by the nostalgic spirit of Portuguese music, with influences from Soul, R&B, and Jazz, Manila are a band formed by, Gerard Torres (key), Carmo Braga da Costa (Voice), João Serra (Guitarra) and Zé Lobo da Costa.
The different backgrounds and inspirations of each member conflict in an eclectic song and full of melodies that are in the head, presenting an original proposal of indie pop Portuguese.
Manila are counters of sound stories. With their music, they want to travel through the groove, floating between topics that touch existentialism, love, loneliness, and the infinite dichotomies of life. "Sunday afternoon" is your debut EP.
