About event

We cordially invite you to the lecture by Václav Janoščík entitled (Super)heroism and theory ::: Media and the present (of who we are), which will take place on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. in room N51 (building N, Institute of musicology MUNI). The lecture takes place as part of the TIM Master class course at TIM FF MU in Brno.

(Super)heroism and theory ::: Media and the present (of who we are)

1940 - suicide of Walter Benjamin (the founder of media theory) and the first issue of the stand-alone Batman comic. 1972 Jacques Lacan publishes Seminar on the Stolen Letter (a very special medium) and the seminal half-human, half-plant Swamp Thing comic is published for the first time. 1999 - Star Wars episode one comes to cinemas, but the Tiqqun collective is also created, which publishes, for example, Foundations for the Young-Girl Theory in its first notebook. Or 2013 - when the Superman reboot Man of Steel is released and at the same time the Manifesto for accelerationist politics.

Maybe it's not just a strange or random chronology, but a chronopolitical perspective that allows us to understand more deeply how popular culture is connected and critical theory, technology and thought, past and future, media and identities. In addition to this central question of the relationship between who we are and the media, I will try to defend the thesis that the media or technology is the most important problem of today, that philosophy is more or less becoming a theory of media and art (after the post-media and post-conceptual era) in a specific sense precisely media art.

During the seminar, I would like to present for the first time ever a new book (The past dreams of today: The history of superheroes and critical theories), a quasi-method of pop-philosophy and speculative history, a new field at the Prague AVU ( Art and contemporary technology), but above all the possibilities of studying media today (and indirectly also my own entry into the world of contemporary art, media theory and practice, and the philosophy of technology).

Mgr. et Mgr. Václav Janoščík, PhD. is a theorist, curator and pedagogue, currently working in Ústí nad Labem (FUD UJEP) and Prague (UMPRUM, AVU). It deals with interdisciplinary overlaps between philosophy, art and media theory. He is the author and editor of publications devoted to aspects of contemporary thought and pop philosophy, new materialism, speculative realism, accelerationism and future studies.
