After eighteen years, the legendary couple Matmos, i.e. Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt, this time thanks to the invitation of the Jednota collective.

A duo that can make powerful bangers just from the sounds of your washing machine spinning (Ultimate Care II), build entire albums on the sounds of surgery (A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure), from the ubiquitous plastic brothel, in which the police riot shield is the main focus (Plastic Anniversary), or with the assistance of a confused trapped rat that they tried to evict from their apartment (Rat Relocation Program). Without exaggeration, it would be easier to list the objects whose sounds they did not record or sample.

One might get the impression that they are avowed conceptualists, but despite their indisputable skill in this field, Matmos are also skilled musicians, and their work is not lacking in a touch of flair at the same time - they are able to combine playful disco with avant-garde arrangements, be simultaneously groovy, emotional and imaginative. In many ways they have a lot in common with Matthew Herbert, who is also behind Drew's solo project The Soft Pink Truth (when he once teased him about not being able to put together a solid house record).

Martin and Drew have been making music together since the early nineties and have been a couple for just as long. In addition to residencies, university teaching and composing soundtracks, during that time they also collaborated with an endless constellation of other musicians. Among the most famous ones, let's mention at least Björk, who helped with the production of the Vespertine album and also performed live with her during that period. They return to us with the current album Metallic Life Review, where they use their lifetime catalog of metal recordings, but they will also have a large part of the physical objects with them. It's not surprising that they avoid the classic industrial cliché on it, you won't find bombast and darkness here at all, but you can, for example, elaborate etudes of creaking doors, which don't go well with the solos of jazz aces. Matmos destroys the ideas of what electronic music is and prefers to explore what it could be.

The Czech experimental electronic scene is not big, but a few names stand out. Sorbitol Drops has been among them since the release of their debut Remízek Music (Gin&Platonic, 2024) at the latest, and due to its scope and commitment, it will only be talked about more. The author of the project, Antonín Závodný, is the dramaturg of the Trať festival and has collaborated with Manka Lustigová, Sofi and Natália Pleváková or Ursula Sereghy, in addition to studying new media at AVU. His approach to art is therefore inherently multidisciplinary, which is indirectly prescribed even in pure sound creation.

Like Sorbitol Drops, he creates environments in which he performs like a video game. Enchanting structures emerge from the digital mess, on which an imaginary sound camera zooms in for a moment, gradually sharpens, and then turns its attention elsewhere in a sudden cut. The hi-tech impression of precise sound design is counterpointed by more organic melodic motifs, often based on processed samples. It's a world where everything is possible, and the superpower of Sorbitol Drops is to outline an identity in this multiplicity.
