About event
The workshop titled "Mechanical Space Systems" is designed to equip engineers and scientists with the essential knowledge and skills for developing mechanical systems used in space applications. Led by Prof. Markus Pietras from Munich University of Applied Sciences, this event will cover a comprehensive array of topics crucial for understanding the challenges and solutions in the design and implementation of mechanical systems in the harsh environments of space. Participants will delve into the fundamentals of satellite orbits, the technology behind optical space instruments, and the flight control systems for both unmanned and manned aircraft, with a particular emphasis on mechanical systems that must endure extreme conditions such as high vacuum, radiation, and significant temperature fluctuations. The course will begin with an exploration of mechanical space systems, focusing on deployment mechanisms for solar panels, antennas, and instrument booms. Participants will learn about the critical nature of these mechanisms and the consequences of failures, which can lead to mission loss. The program will examine actuators and sensors, including electromechanical drives, pyrotechnic actuators, and shape memory mechanisms, allowing attendees to grasp their applications and design intricacies. As the workshop progresses, the focus will shift to more complex mechanical designs, including robotic systems and their roles in space operations. Participants will gain insight into the behavior of mechanical components in space, addressing tribological issues such as friction, lubrication, and wear, which are pivotal for ensuring the reliability and longevity of these systems.Furthermore, the workshop will provide hands-on experiences with demonstration models, allowing attendees to engage interactively with the specialized actuators used in space travel. The final segments of the course will focus on advanced topics, such as the planning and execution of tests for qualification and functional verification of space mechanisms, as well as the control of multi-degree-of-freedom robotic systems. Essential kinematic descriptions and control methods will be discussed, emphasizing the challenges posed by the vast distances in space that complicate real-time control. Ultimately, the workshop aims to empower participants to independently design mechanical systems for various space applications while understanding the technical possibilities and challenges involved. The workshop is particularly targeted at professionals in the aerospace sector, including those developing new technologies, small satellites, or experiments for scientific purposes. Basic knowledge of mechanics and technical components is beneficial for attendees, ensuring that they can fully engage with the course material. Each participant will receive a course certificate and access to extensive materials to aid their continued learning in this critical field of study. The event is organized by DGLR and will take place in Munich, Germany.
