About event
What lies between the shores? It's not just the flow of the river. It's a world of wetlands, dead shoulders, and riparian forests—a space where water meets land to create a home for thousands of life forms. We have prepared the event Medzi brehmi for all those who want to get to know this hidden world not only from afar, but really up close.
Date: Saturday, March 21, 2026
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Place: Ekocentrum – Čunovo Manor
Transportation: Bus no. 91 (MiÚ Čunovo stop)
Forget boring lectures. We have prepared a lively, interactive event for you, where knowledge is gained through experience. You will be guided through the program by our lecturers, who are ready to devote themselves to you, discuss and draw you and your children into the secrets of nature. Come find out how water filtration works, make your own wetland and help us find where the local beaver has disappeared to.
Why are wetlands important?
Wetlands are among the rarest and most endangered ecosystems in our country. They are the place where water, soil, plants, animals and man meet, and it is in this "interspace" that an extraordinarily rich life arises. Dead shoulders, floodplain forests and flooded areas function as natural water reservoirs, landscape cleaners and refuges for many plant and animal species.
Wetlands are of fundamental importance in our area near the Danube. They affect water quality, mitigate the effects of drought and floods, and directly shape the landscape in which we live. Their condition directly affects us - from the availability of drinking water to the health of the soil and the quality of the food on our tables. The event "Between the banks" was created as an invitation to slow down, look at the world around you with different eyes and understand why the protection of wetlands is crucial for the entire course of life in Čunov and in the entire Danube Region.
Event program
A beaver on the run! – search
Times: 10:00 – 10:45 | 12:00 – 12:45 | 14:00 - 14:45 (duration 45 min)
A strange case happened in the Ecocentre - the beaver that lived here suddenly disappeared. He left nothing behind, just a few footprints, gnawed wood and remnants of levee material. What happened? Did something disturb him, or did he no longer have the conditions to live? Children will become little natural detectives and discover at the stations what the beaver needs to live, how it builds its dams and especially how our behavior affects the life around us. At the end of the search, we may discover that the beaver has not gone far from us...
Commented walk to the dead arms of the Danube
Times: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. | 15:00 – 16:30 (duration 1.5 hours)
What does a real wetland look like in the field? Together with lecturer Maroš, we will move to the nearby dead branches of the Danube in Čunov. We will show you the tracks of the beaver, we will talk about the plants of floodplain forests, birds and amphibians tied to water. The walk is suitable for all age groups, we recommend sturdy shoes.
Build a wetland - workshop with Dada
Times: 11:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | 13:15 – 14:00 | 15:15 – 16:00 (duration 45 min)
How does a wetland work and why can it retain water in the country? Children will create their own wetland model right in the aquarium. Using natural materials - sand, gravel, wood and leaves - they will try out how dead shoulders are created and what role they play in the ecosystem. The activity is intended for children, but we also welcome curious parents.
The importance of wetlands for the landscape (expert input)
Times: 11:00 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. | 13:00 – 13:15 | 15:00 – 15:15
Even before you build your own wetland, RNDr. Viktória Miklósová, PhD. from the Institute of Landscape Ecology of the SAS, a short but nutritious professional insight. You will learn important "know-how" about why these ecosystems are crucial for water retention and biodiversity, thanks to which you will better understand the connections in the creation itself.
How is water purified? (interactive station)
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (ongoing)
Did you know that nature can clean water by itself, without chemicals or technology? See an illustrative model of water filtration using layers of gravel and sand and find out what an important role soil and sediments in wetlands play in this process.
Responsible production: VEGGET urban farm
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (ongoing)
A new farm is opening in Čunov and we are happy to welcome it here. Come and talk about what responsible food production means in practice.
