About event

Drama, R: Agnieszka Smoczyńska, PL 2015, 92 min, OmdU

“Pull us out / Don’t be afraid / We won’t eat you up!” With this song, two mermaids attract the attention of a partying party on the Vistula. When they pull ashore, they find themselves in the middle of the candy-colored world of the 1980s. In a dance club they are supposed to make the cash registers ring as a new stage attraction, but the figures from the river cannot be domesticated.

With her debut, Agnieszka Smoczyńska (born 1978 in Wrocław) conquered the audience in no time. Her wild genre mix of musical, romantic comedy, modern fairy tale, nostalgic trip, trash and horror won numerous awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival. Her film is many things at the same time: a social study of the socialist People's Republic of Poland shortly before its downfall, an allegory of the unbridled feminine and a reinterpreted story of the Warsaw heraldic figure - the mermaid.

To the “Meet Polish Cinema” series:

In 2014, after a long wait, the first (and so far only) Oscar for the best non-English language film finally went to Poland. A decade has passed since the triumph of Paweł Pawlikowski's black-and-white drama "Ida" - time to ask what has happened in Polish film during this time and whether it is of any importance to us.

This question will be examined as part of the monthly film series at City Kino Wedding - because a lot has happened. Three Oscar nominations (the second best rate in the world in the last ten years), two prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, five films each in the main competitions of the Berlinale (four of which were awarded a Silver Bear) and the Venice Film Festival, as well as a whopping 16 European film awards - the artistic crisis of the post-reunification period seems to have disappeared.

Polish cinema has returned to the international stage with flying colors and has its regular place at prestigious films Cinema events reclaimed. Every year it celebrates bigger and smaller triumphs and foreign companies are working more and more frequently with Polish film producers - just remember successes like “Zone of Interest”, “A Real Pain” or “The Girl with the Needle”.

The series shows treasures from the past decade – films that are now classics or are in the process of becoming one. From romantic comedy to horror, from animated film to historical epic, from psychological chamber drama to social panorama - in a wide range of genres, Polish directors bring our dreams, fears and hopes to the screen - regardless of the latitude at which we live.
