About event
“She got the widow’s veil from Russia.” This sentence from a field post letter marks the end of a story: In 1943, Dr. Heinrich Kuhlmann, SA Sturmführer from Bad Sooden-Allendorf, in Stalingrad. His wife remained behind - and a huge collection of over 1,500 field post letters.
Her grandson is the anti-fascist and historian Friedrich Burschel. For him, these letters became the key to a disturbing and painful journey into his own family history. They not only testify to the small-mindedness of everyday life, but above all to the fanatical belief in National Socialism, the megalomania and the deep involvement of his family in the fascist regime.
But what does it mean for an anti-fascist today to name the perpetrators in his own family? How do you break the silence that has obscured your own responsibility for generations? And why is this personal coming to terms with an essential but often uncomfortable part of a social politics of remembrance?
In his lecture, Friedrich Burschel reports on this intensive search for clues. He places it in the context of German post-war history, in which the “reappraisal” often remained superficial, and shows how repressing one's own perpetrators has had a fatal impact on our society to this day - a society that, almost 100 years later, is once again giving in to fantasies of grandeur and authoritarian temptations.
About the speaker:
Friedrich Burschel is a historian and journalist. He worked for a decade and a half as a speaker on neo-Nazism and structures/ideologies of inequality at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung. He observed the NSU trial in Munich for over five years. He is the editor of numerous publications, including “The Fascist Century. New Right Discourses on the West, Identity, Europe and Neoliberalism” and “Right Fringes. Fascism, society and the state».
An event by the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung. We are looking forward to an exciting and necessary evening.
