About event

🟠When the crisis gives birth to extremes

🟠 The threat of democracy, manipulation of masses and loss of critical thinking are the reasons why melancholy of defiance is the main representative of the Slovak repertoire theater in the curatorial selection of the main program. The award -winning Man Booker Prize, directed by Roman Polák, one of the most important Slovak directors, offers a deep reflection on social decline and fragility of democracy. Thirty years since its last performance at the Theater Nitra, the Trnava Theater returns to the festival with an urgent warning. The unique atmosphere is also provided by the mixed choir Tirnavia led by Michal Stahla. Unexpectedly, a circus with a principal and a stuffed whale will come to the town. Polak uses the symbolism of a stuffed whale as a metaphor of false savior, stimulating people's hysteria. The struggle for the truth and harmony at a time when society is rushing to fanaticism embodies two lonely defiant - former headmaster of the music school Mr. Eszter (Vladimír Jedľovský) and his companion, mentally backward postman Valuska (Michal Jánoš). And it is necessary to mention the even the most frightening character of the story - Mrs. Eszter, Eszter's ex -wife, who is trying to restore order and organize the movement for the purity of the streets. However, the new order is becoming a new totalitarianism. Roman Polák's directorial approach transforms Kraszzhorkai's complicated, shifted sentences and apocalyptic visions to a visually impressive theater language. It shows society in which recurrent crisis situations, functional institutions and the collapse of basic values ultimately motivate citizens to radical answers. The show is followed by a discussion of viewers with the creators.
