Let yourself be seduced! This is the twenties. (Scroll Down for English)
In 310 days of shooting, with 36,000 extras and 200,000 costumes and a budget of five million Reichsmarks, which was gigantic for the time, a universal, timeless theme was translated into images that has lost none of its fascination to this day. (Deutsche Kinemathek)
Like no other film, METROPOLIS represents the heyday of German silent film made in Berlin – Babelsberg. Electricity made things move, made the nights and the asphalt glow. The engine powered the automobile and the airplane, and the elevator grew the skyscrapers. Through the cinematograph, the vision / illusion of a future metropolis was cast on the white walls of the cinema palaces and the people rose from the catacombs and demanded their fair share. A new era was born and is brought to life by the Babylon Orchestra Berlin in Babylon, built in 1929, in old/new splendor on the gold-framed screen.
A thrilling journey through time into the past, a thrilling journey through time into the future.
A film from the collection of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden
