About event
Mezzanine: Sand Dam
Croatia, Lithuania, Slovenia / 2025 / 88 min
director: Čejen Černić Čanak
admission voluntary
Marko does not have very big plans for the future: life in a small Croatian village suits him perfectly. He will probably marry his girlfriend, take care of his younger brother and work with his father in a car repair shop. Maybe someday he could win a championship in leverage - and that's all he needs to be happy. Or yes? With the return of Slaven, Mark's childhood best friend and first love, suddenly nothing is so certain. The level of repressed desires rises just like the river outside the village, but while the neighbors work together to build a dam against the flood, Marco is all alone with his emotions. I wish he could put sandbags around them to keep them out! In her feature debut, director Čejen Černić Čanak shows an authentic and at the same time fragile story about the search for inner freedom in a conservative environment. Her film was shown for the first time at the Berlinale and was a success at the festival in Pula, Croatia.
Queer film festival Mezipatra at Prague Pride – these are film screenings in a summer cinema, discussions with interesting guests, a traditional quiz and an exhibition. Come experience the festival atmosphere and shorten the wait for November! This year at the Summer Cinema in front of Cross (Mon, Thu), Kinská Summer Cinema (Tues, Wed) and again in the Karlín Barracks (Fri).
The film is shown in Croatian with Czech and English subtitles.

voluntary admission fee
Marko has no grand plans for the future: life in a small Croatian village suits him just fine. He'll probably marry his girlfriend soon, look after his younger brother, and work alongside his father in the auto shop. He might even win the arm-wrestling championship one day – and that seems to be all he needs to be happy. Or does it? When Slaven, Marko's childhood best friend and first love, returns, nothing feels certain anymore. Suppressed desires rise like the nearby river. But while the villagers work together to build a dam against the flood, Marko has no one to help him deal with his emotions. If only he could sandbag them so they'd never escape! In her feature debut, director Čejen Černić Čanak delivers an authentic yet delicate story about the search for inner freedom in a conservative environment. The film premiered at Berlinale and went on to achieve success at the Pula Film Festival in Croatia.
Mezipatra Queer Film Festival at Prague Pride will feature open-air film screenings, engaging discussions, the traditional quiz, and an exhibition. Come and enjoy the festival experience in a summer setting, this year at three venues: Summer Cinema at Cross Club (Mon, Thu), Open Air Cinema Kinský Garden (Tue, Wed) and Kasárna Karlín (Fri)!
The film will be screened in Croatian with Czech and English subtitles.
The project is implemented with financial support from the City of Prague.
