About event
In July 2023, a satellite from the Sentinel family of the European Copernicus project measured a record global ocean surface temperature. 0.6°C higher than the long-term average. Is it a lot or a little? We will show an example of how even high school physics students can understand and describe a problem using remote sensing data. The heat from the oceans must have been released into the atmosphere and converted into kinetic and potential energy there. The implications are illustrated by data from terrestrial weather stations and media reports. We will look for processes that release comparable energy. And we will have to go into space for that.
Postscript: In July 2024, even higher temperatures were measured than in 2023... unfortunately, we are not moving in a circle, but in a spiral.
