About event
🖋 Michal Hvorecký / Jan Horák: KILL A MAN 🌞
The second part of the "Russian" trilogy directed by Jan Horák is loosely inspired by the novella Red Ride by the Russian author Isaak Babel. The fragmentary story based on Babel's war diaries and the notes of the translator Jan Zábrana takes place in a fairy-tale setting. The script for the production was written by contemporary Slovak writer Michal Hvorecký in collaboration with director Jan Horák.
The main character is the author of the Red Cavalry, Isaak Babel (Jan Jankovský), who gives testimony about the atrocities committed during his time in the First Cavalry Army during the Russian Civil War and the Polish-Soviet War. The production not only encourages reflection on historical events, but also reveals parallels between then and current cases of Russian aggression.
Current Russian aggression towards Ukraine, i.e. against any form of democratic values and their spread near Russia, is a call to broader thinking. We need to ask ourselves why history repeats itself in such an unfortunate way, why humanity is a superfluous unit in Russia, whether there is a possibility of change in Russian society, what kind of reality people who are in opposition live in in Russia. The questions are endless.
