About event
Josef Frank and the others. New furniture 1920–1940
The Möbelmuseum Vienna is devoted to the modern furniture design of the interwar period in Austria in 2025. The 140th birthday of the architect Josef Frank (1885–1967) and the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Vienna Facilities company Haus & Garten are occasions for the main topic. Lucie Rie (1902–1995), designed by Ernst A. Plischke in 1928, was acquired exactly thirty years ago immediately after the death of the ceramic artist and, after the extensive restoration in the workshops of the Federal Mobile Administration, was one of the highlights of the furniture museum. A complete apartment facility by Josef Frank, which was carried out by the Haus & Garten company in 1932, can be presented for the first time.
In addition, complete ensembles and individual furniture from the Austrian architects Felix Angelfeld, Herbert Eichholzer, Heinrich Glaß (later: Henry P. Glass), Hugo Gorge, Walter Loos, Ernst A. Plischke, Otto Prutscher and Robert Introduced sleepy (later: Sheldon).
The new furniture from Austria was characterized in the 1920s and 1930s by creative diversity, comfort and high quality of manual quality. The Austrian furniture design of the interwar period differed significantly from the design concept of the Bauhaus and the luxurious world of the French Art Deco.
For the exhibition, an accompanying publication of the same name appears in Böhlau Verlag.
