Monika Groth: "Mixtape of an Eastern Girl"

Mixtape of an Eastern Girl is a novel about growing up in the GDR, female self-empowerment and music as an existential aid to survival. The protagonist Joni Müller grows up between prefabricated buildings, quiet rebellion and longing. Music becomes her escape point. Radio sounds, western cassettes and song lyrics open windows into another reality. She bends the GDR until it no longer works and after the fall of the Berlin Wall she lives her own road movie: she stumbles through relationships, cities and times. Always looking for a place that feels like home. And for a sound that carries them.
