Founded in 2003, this ensemble has stood out internationally for its rigorous historical approach to repertoire before 1800, with particular emphasis on Hispanic music from the centuries XV to XVII. With an extensive discography dedicated to the preservation of Valencian music and performances at prestigious festivals across Europe and America, Harmonia del Parnร s is recognized for its unique ability to combine musicological research with vibrant artistic creativity. > In this concert, the ensemble performs one of Antonio Caldara's most beautiful and intense oratorios, Morte e sepoltura di Christo.
The Venetian composer Antonio Caldara worked for several years in Mantua and Rome before taking on the role of โVizekapellmeisterโ (under the direction of Johann Joseph Fux) at the Viennese court of Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor. He composed this oratorio for the Lenten celebrations of 1724, following the typical two-part structure of the time, based on a text that narrates the feelings and reflections of some of the characters involved in the Passion of Christ. Presented for the first time in Vienna that year, it differs by not following the traditional narration of the Passion and Death of Christ. Instead, it focuses on expressing, through the various arias, the characters' feelings and emotions in relation to the events involving Christ, offering a musical narration of the affections from passion to death. The premiere featured the participation of the most renowned singers of the Viennese court, all men, including the roles of Maria Magdalena and Maria di Giacobbe, played by the Italian castrati Domenico Genovesi and Giovanni Carestini, respectively. It is important to highlight that the different sections that make up the work are very demanding for both the voice and the orchestra, with four of the fifteen arias featuring instrumental solos, for violin, chalumeau, trombone and a set of two trombones and a bassoon, highlighting the high level of musical competence required in this emotional oratorio.
The ensemble Harmonia del Parnรกs presented the scenic performance of the oratorio Morte e sepoltura di Christo by Antonio Caldara for the first time in March 2024 at the Palau de la Mรบsica de Valence. Marian Rosa Montagut, founder of the ensemble and artistic director of this concert, considers this to be a deeply moving experience.
For a year and a half, the work was worked on and transcribed by Marian, a renowned musicologist, from of the original score. This meticulous process was critical to respecting the historical integrity of the music, including the use of instruments preserved from authentic models that have been carefully restored. The vocal roles were also adapted, essential for the authenticity of the performance. Traditionally, some female roles, such as those of the Marys โ Mary Magdalene and Maria di Giacobbe โ were played by men, a common practice at the time the work was written. However, it was decided to assign these roles to women. This decision avoids distractions that could arise with the casting of men in such roles, allowing the audience to focus on the musical qualities of the work. Thus, assures the artistic director, the essence of the original work has been preserved, adapting it at the same time to contemporary expectations.
The public can expect a fusion of baroque music with modern scenic elements that promise a journey intense emotional. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the choice of instruments to the inclusion of the chalumeau, a rare instrument that will enrich the concert's sonic palette. "The opportunity to hear the chalumeau in action is unique and will certainly be one of the many reasons not to miss this performance", adds Marian.
