Ukrainian poet Otto von F. wakes up one chilly autumn morning in 1991 with a mad hangover on the top floor of the accommodation facility of the Moscow Institute - the temporary home of an all-Union literature boom. Rescuers call, and so begins his phantasmagorical journey through the capital of a crumbling empire. He descends from the heights of his "ivory tower" to the infamous beer hall on Fonvizinov, takes a hot bath in the apartment of his Russian lover - a snake hunter, witnesses a terrorist attack and finds a gateway to the underworld in the Children's World department store.

He wanders through the Soviet metropolis full of generals, secretaries, foreigners, patriots, drunkards and sensitives, and at the same time there is enough for everyone to write letters to His Highness Olelk the Second (Dolgorukém-Rurikov), the fictitious heir to the throne of Kievan Rus, during whose domination over Eastern Europe we find the first ever mention of a Moscow. Otto von F. is subjected to trials and temptations, which he resists and mocks, which he resists and succumbs to. Otto von F., a Ukrainian poet, plays for his own soul.

Yurij Andruchovych (1960) is one of the best-known contemporary Ukrainian writers, poets and essayists. His famous Muscovyade (1993) is subtitled a "spooky novel". In the carnival atmosphere, inextricably linking the noble with the low, the author presents a picture of the disintegration of the Soviet empire, which reviews its totalitarian ideas, pretends to change laws and life habits and hopes for its revival, its eternity. And just as the carnival repeats itself every year, so do imperial wars of conquest and related reminders of social and personal failure. In the context of the current geopolitical and military situation, this image immediately takes on a "spooky" dimension. support from the Czech-German Future Fund.
