A festival tribute to the bard with a guitar, the living conscience of the Czech nation, Karl Kryl, whose legacy is more relevant than ever in the year of his double anniversary 🎸
An uncompromising critic, but also a tender poet and essential Czechoslovak Karel Kryl will be honored in the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum by two iconic Czech-Slovak artists who will meet on one stage on the occasion of an intimate tribute in the temple of Czech culture - David Koller and Richard Müller ❕
Twenty Kryls will be performed songs in an acoustic version and chamber arrangements created just for this occasion. Koller and Müller have selected songs mapping all of Kryl's essential creative periods: from the early ones (Strejček strach and teta obava), through iconic songs from the 60s (Bratríčka zívírej vratka, Salome, Veličenststvo kat, Anděl, Pieta..), exiles (Karavana mraků , Thank you) to songs from Kryl's last period, from the Velvet Revolution in 1989 to his death in 1994 (Lullaby, Od Čadce k Dunaju, Babylon, Monologues...).
An unrepeatable tribute to Kryl realizes the Prague Sounds festival symbolically in the Year of Czech Music, which traditionally falls on years ending with the number four, because a number of important personalities from Dvořák, Smetana to Janáček were born or died in the year ending with this number. Karel Kryl rightfully belongs in the gallery of personalities of the Year of Czech Music, not only because of his date of death or birth (1944 - 1994).
At a time when Kryl's legacy is understood by people from whom "Bratříček" would probably not have expected it, moreover, at a time of hum and vulture wars unleashed by the "Strange Prince", the message and prophecy of a small big man with a guitar will be heard on the Rudolfinum stage with renewed, purifying power.

If we perceive folk songs not as museum fixed artefacts, but as a continuous process where generations pass on to each other the most valuable of the nation's cultural memory, then the best testimony for the author is when his compositions live on freely, independently of his person. When they are sung around campfires by people who may not even know Kryl's name, but inadvertently confirm that his work is immortal. Karel Kryl is one of the few who has succeeded in this in our country. Petr Dorůžka
