Workshop 'Symbolism in family photos' by Nora Taher

With passion and curiosity, Nora (Studio Taher) themes such as identity, intercultural dialogue, migration and healing through images and stories. Symbols and patterns play a central role in her artistic practice. She often takes symbols from found footage, which she gives a new meaning or enlarges in their original meaning. In this way she shows how symbols are everywhere and serve as their own form of communication. During the workshop, Nora invites participants to experience this process themselves. They bring their own family photo, which is analyzed together to discover symbols and patterns.

These symbols take on a personal meaning and form the basis for their own design. Participants then make stencils of their chosen symbol, with which they learn how a single or multiple images can be repeated and transformed into a pattern.

By printing this pattern on a blank scarf, they discover they how symbols can not only carry stories, but also add new layers of communication and meaning in their repetition. The result is a unique textile design that makes the personal family story tangible and can be taken home.
