As part of the exhibition “Interwoven Life with Mushrooms” we invite you to a special event: a mycological walk with the scientist Johanna Ficht in Berlin's Plänterwald. This is an excellent opportunity to discover in nature the organisms that inspired the works of Joanna Hoffmann and Theresa Schubert - and to learn more about their importance to the ecosystem and our world.
Mycelium, the underground network of fungi, is an essential part of our ecosystem. As a symbiosis partner, decomposer or parasite, it makes a decisive contribution to maintaining material cycles. During a one and a half hour walk in the Plänterwald city forest, you will learn that you don't have to leave the city to discover hundreds of species of mushrooms.
Johanna Ficht takes you on a search for clues:
Which mushroom fruiting bodies can we discover in the Plänterwald, and what role do these mushrooms play there?
How have we as humans integrated mushrooms into our lives for thousands of years - as edible or medicinal mushrooms, as clothing, wound dressings or for making fire?
And how are ecological material cycles used biotechnologically today to develop sustainable, mycelium-based materials?
Accompany us on a journey into the fascinating world of funga!
JOHANNA FICHT is a biological chemist (M.Sc.) and is currently doing her doctorate at the Charité in the field of systems biology. During her master's degree, she worked in a collaboration project between the TU Berlin (Prof. Vera Meyer's department) and Mitkunstzentrale e.V. In October 2021, she and her team set up the mushroom art laboratory, which has since offered the course "Biotechnology in the Context of Art and Design" every semester since then. In this interdisciplinary format, people from different backgrounds conduct research with mycelium-based materials. In 2025, Johanna Ficht completed her mushroom coach training from the German Society for Mycology. Since then, as part of the mushroom art laboratory, she has been organizing various workshops and educational hikes on topics such as mushrooms in the ecosystem, introduction to mushroom identification and biotechnology with mushrooms.
