About event

Slovak cinematography was born difficult, uncertain and slow. Its origin and first steps are closely related to politics. At first, its constitution is prevented by circumstances related to Magyarization in the Hungarian Monarchy. The First Czechoslovak Republic also did not start the basic processes leading to its stable operation, and thus, paradoxically, Slovak film became fully institutionalized only during the Slovak State, in the times of raging fascism and on its direct order.

Jánošík (Jaroslav SIakeľ, Czechoslovakia, 1921, 68')
Before the film Jánošík by the Siakeľov brothers, only a few film productions were made in Slovakia. These were mostly short amateur works (e.g. by the Schreiber brothers) or period news. After the filming of the film Jánošík, there are also only a few rare attempts connected mainly with the activities of Matica Slovenská. American Slovaks Daniel and Jaroslav Siakeľ together with producer Ján Závodny founded the Tatra film Corporation and are making a film that is intended to bring the Czechoslovak audience a whiff of the American approach to film as entertainment and to offer American Slovaks images of their native region.
